Can we build online degrees that build social capital without depending on the learner already being in an environment that fosters experiential learning in that area? Note that this was my case: my employment in an educational institution is the main reason I could do my PhD and masters. I had enough to reflect on in my f2f coupled with theory and discussion of experience with others online.

It then totally makes sense. But what if I needed to get the degree first before I could get the job? What if my job had nothing to do with my masters while I was studying it? How would I build the social and cultural capital to go along with it? I was thinking recently of visa and immigration laws that limit the ability of people from certain countries to study in the US for example. And wondering if online would be a good option for them.

And so it would be a consequence of Othering, promoting more Othering. First, the Othering of not giving visas.

Then, the Othering of an inferior education, not because it is poor quality online learning, per se, but because of lack of social and cultural capital. But I am resolving to remember to give to myself as well. I am not going to withhold from others. But I can put myself on the list of people who can receive from me, too. Among those things, is to find ways to teach my kid to give me and stop taking me for granted. For 7 years I expected her to learn by example, from my model of giving. Now she needs to learn by practice, by practicing giving herself as well.

Live a model of giving and receiving rather than being only one of tthese at a time. I had put my f2f social life pretty much on hold while my kid was growing up. I now want to find time to spend with my girlfriends. This is not something huge. But something I truly miss. And I want to make time for it every week or so. May be a different friend each time.

An hour or two here and there. Something that is not work and is not a playdate.

Though occasionally two of these meet. I decided it does not make me happy, and their satisfaction does not make me happy, so who cares? So yeah. Remember to give back to myself! September 7, by Maha Bali 4 Comments. Reading Time: 2 minutes I came across this article the other day. About how machines will be using AI to understand human emotions better than some humans can. Why is that not the worthwhile investment???? And my reaction is: Why do we want AI to further mediate already mediated communication? Seeking fake human care. Can you imagine depending constantly on a machine to tell you how another human feels, to do that interpretation for you, so much that you forget how to use your natural intuition yourself, you stop exercising it… like people who use calculators so early they forget to to do basic aarithmetic in their heads… or like birds raised in cages who forget how to fly.

Who in the world asked for this? In whose interests is it to train AI to replace o honestly, even augment humans in their affective abilities? Are the tech folks so socially insecure that they would rather teach a machine to understand human emotions, instead of teaching themselves how to do so?

In whose interests is all this? I have learned and taught online for years. I can definitely tell emotion from a distance almost always. Or add more humans into it to do mentoring roles. But we can invest time and resources into helping humans build relationships and understanding, instead of using machines to do it.

But I did it. For reasons that make no sense to anyone but myself. I decided to submit a proposal to a CfP on my own rather than with a partner, submitted it slightly late but it got accepted, the I discovered the extremely tight deadline, then submitted to IRB here for ethical approval, and that took time despite their willingness… because… summer. Then I basically had 10 days to deadline. So then one of the things I did was modify my target group of participants to interview so that I could find an accessible small group who were willing.

Thankfully, I had enough contacts within those target groups to get a reasonable number of people to grant me a minute interview within those 10 days. I guess I could have modified my design to be focus groups rather than inteviews, but I sense this might have been more difficult to schedule and analyze. In any case, this worked out OK. I also did my lit review in between doing interviews. It is not at all a good lit review. I did just enough to situate my work in so existing body of work but without going too deeply into it.

One of the struggles I had for the first time ever is that I suddenly became concerned with how fairly I was giving space on the paper to different voices. Whose ideas was I privileging and why? I was reporting the diversity of perspectives but choosing particular things to quote, obviously, and I ws worried that. Incidentally, I was examining an MA thesis on a closely related topic in the midst of all this, so that kinda played into it all, indirectly.

I often advocate for giving students choices in content, assessments, activities and I am usually tackling this from an angle of inclusivity and engagement and maybe autonomy and empowerment, but it suddenly occurred to me that giving students choices also develops critical thinking.
